The Copyright Notice
The protector of your poems
Hello, poetry lovers!
I’ve noticed that some people have been adding copyright notices on every poem they make.
Or the classic “this poem is mine”no stealing.”
You can create a clear copyright notice on your site by following the steps below:
Step 1
Go to Customize
Step 2
Go to Widgets
Step 3
Click “Add a Widget”
Step 4
Scroll and look for “Text”
Step 5
Copy and paste this to your text widget
© [Full Name] and [Site Name], [Current Year or Year Range]. Unauthorized use and/or duplication of this material without express and written permission from this site’s author and/or owner is strictly prohibited. Excerpts and links may be used, provided that full and clear credit is given to [Your Name] and [Your Site Name] with appropriate and specific direction to the original content.
Step 6
Set the title of the text widget to “Copyright Notice”
Step 7
Save and Publish
It should look something like this:
Thank you for liking one of my posts! I’m glad because it brought me here. A friend of mine had copyright issues just yesterday – this is very helpful. May I ask – are these standard wordings for such copyright notices? Thanks! 🙂 ~Annie

No problem! Your post is an inspiration for the women of the world. Yes, there are, see step 5.
Have a good day 🙂

Thank you! I have added the notice on my blog. Had been thinking of it but didn’t get around to doing so until what happened to my friend yesterday. You have a great day, too!

Thank you so much.
does this need to be done for all posts or once I get the widget functioning, will it cover all of them?

Your copyright notice in your website is very visible. You’ll be fine. It doesn’t have to be done for all posts and it would cover all of them because you have a copyright notice at the middle right side of your site. Have a good day 🙂

Copyright notice or not, you’d think people would know better than to risk a lawsuit. Heck! Who am I kidding? People know that it’s wrong to steal and I still find empty packages at my job.

A very good advise, thank you. Wrote the copyright information in the “about” section, perhaps it should cover it all.

Thanks so much for posting a step-by-step on how to post a copyright notice. I would NEVER have been able to figure that out! (Lack of computer skills d/t age 🙂 ). I appreciate you reading one of my poems. I’ll return the favor!

Kudos for raising the issue. Incidentally, the © sign can be inserted easily using (ALT+0169). However, it not been needed in the US since USCO Circular 3 was issued in 1989 (http://www.copyright.gov/circs/circ03.pdf) as all original work is automatically copyrighted as soon as it is created, and is therefore protected by US law. Having said that, whether you use the © is your choice, as it may discourage the casual user. The best legal protection is to register your work (or body of work) at the US copyright office (http://www.copyright.gov/). This gives you much more legal power to sue for damages and legal costs…

Thank you for this information 🙂 I’ve figured that out myself which is why I’ve taken down my copyright notice due to the automatic copyright 🙂

Hey, it was NOT a criticism, Juansen! I just wanted to add a little bit of additional information. I am not a lawyer but I do understand that we have copyright protection (in the US) despite what people think. You would be amazed at the number of people (most) who think that just because something is on the web it is free to copy. And as for derivative works, that’s a whole minefield, which is easier for graphical artists, but for poets… whoa, where would you start…?

You’ve misunderstood my comment. Haha. I’ve taken down my copyright notice weeks ago 🙂 Like I said, I figured it out (weeks ago) that everything I post here is automatically copyrighted in some way.

Thanks for the useful information. It’s sad that we have to resort to these things, but they are necessary. 🙂

You can choose not too 🙂 You’re protected by copyright by the moment you post something 🙂 Suing someone would cost lots of money. But either way you’re welcome 🙂
